About the Role
As part of our Group IT team, the Systems Engineer plays a critical role in designing, implementing, maintaining, and continually improving enterprise infrastructure and cloud solutions for our customers. Working across complex environments, you'll combine deep technical expertise with a strong customer focus to deliver scalable, secure, and reliable technology solutions that support both current and future business needs.
You will have a relentless focus on automation, innovation, and operational excellence, driving continuous improvement across cloud platforms and enterprise infrastructure. Through an automation-first mindset, you'll enhance customer experiences, improve platform maturity, and enable greater agility, efficiency, and scalability across our customers' environments.
Acting as a trusted technical expert and mentor, you'll collaborate across teams to solve complex technical challenges, promote best practices, contribute to technology roadmaps, and provide leadership on infrastructure and cloud operations. You'll play a key role in uplifting technical capability, optimizing cloud and productivity platforms, and ensuring high levels of service availability and performance.
What you’ll do
As a Systems Engineer, you'll play a key role in delivering reliable, scalable, and innovative cloud and infrastructure solutions while driving operational excellence for our customers. You will combine deep technical expertise with a strong customer focus, leveraging automation and continuous improvement to enhance service delivery and platform maturity.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Driving an automation-first culture to improve customer experience, increase operational efficiency, and strengthen the financial viability of Cloud, Productivity, and Infrastructure services.
- Providing technical support and operational expertise through remote channels, ensuring services are delivered within agreed Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- Troubleshooting and resolving complex technical issues across cloud, infrastructure, operating systems, virtualisation, and productivity platforms, while maintaining clear communication with customers throughout the resolution process.
- Identifying, managing, and escalating complex incidents and technical risks through to successful resolution.
- Designing, implementing, maintaining, and optimising enterprise infrastructure, systems software, firmware, and cloud platforms.
- Monitoring platform performance, reliability, and security, proactively identifying opportunities for automation, operational improvement, and service enhancement.
- Providing technical consultation, guidance, and subject matter expertise across infrastructure, cloud, and productivity technologies.
- Contributing to technology evaluations, testing, roadmap development, and continuous service improvement initiatives.
- Implementing approved changes and ensuring compliance with established change management and operational processes.
- Maintaining accurate operational records, documentation, and reporting to support effective service delivery and knowledge management.
- Collaborating across technical and project teams to successfully deliver customer outcomes, projects, and strategic initiatives.
- Identifying opportunities to improve products, services, automation, education, and customer adoption of technology solutions.
- Supporting a culture of safety and wellbeing by adhering to Datacom's Health and Safety policies and practices.

What you’ll bring
Required experience:
- 6+ years’ experience in systems engineering, infrastructure support, professional services, or managed services.
- Strong technical expertise across Windows Server, Active Directory, Azure, Entra ID, Enterprise Applications, Web Application Firewalls (WAFs), Application Proxies, and enterprise infrastructure technologies.
- Experience supporting and managing enterprise operating systems, hardware, storage, virtualisation platforms, and cloud services.
- Working knowledge of cloud platforms, including Microsoft Azure and AWS, with an understanding of cloud architecture, operational best practices, and platform strategies.
- Experience in private and public cloud provisioning and orchestration, with a focus on automation and scalable infrastructure deployment.
- Strong scripting and automation capabilities, including PowerShell, infrastructure automation tooling, and experience identifying opportunities to streamline operational processes.
- Solid understanding of systems administration, networking, software, and hardware operations, with at least 2 years of hands-on experience managing enterprise platforms and environments.
- Experience with SSL/TLS and PKI certificate management, systems monitoring, patching, firmware management, and platform maintenance activities.
- Strong understanding of operational support, testing, technology lifecycle management, and continuous service improvement practices.
- Proven ability to analyse complex technical issues, troubleshoot effectively, and deliver practical, business-focused solutions.
- Strong stakeholder management and customer engagement skills, with the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and align solutions to business outcomes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships across customers, vendors, suppliers, and internal teams.
- The ability to work effectively in large, collaborative teams while managing competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- A proactive mindset focused on innovation, automation, service improvement, and operational excellence.
- Relevant industry certifications such as Microsoft Azure Administrator (AZ-104) or equivalent cloud certifications are highly regarded.
- A Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, Business, or a related discipline is desirable.
Nice to have:
- Industry certifications such as Microsoft, Red Hat, VMware, Azure, AWS, RHCSA, MCSE, or equivalent.
- Experience within a Tier 2 Service Provider or large managed services environment.
- VMware ESXi, Citrix, and desktop virtualisation experience.
- Experience supporting Red Hat, Ubuntu, CentOS, SUSE, or Solaris environments.
- Knowledge of Ansible and the ability to develop and maintain basic automation playbooks.
- Experience with Microsoft messaging platforms and Microsoft 365 technologies.
- Exposure to satellite management technologies and enterprise systems monitoring tools.
- Strong commercial awareness with an understanding of managed and professional services operations.
- Experience contributing to technical strategy, technology roadmaps, and solution architecture discussions.
- Additional certifications such as AZ-500, MD-102, or other cloud/security-related certifications would be advantageous
