ABOUT THE ROLE
Scientech Research is looking for Finance & Fund Accounting Interns to join our team.
This is a project-based internship for students interested in the intersection of fund accounting, finance, investment operations, and automation. Rather than focusing primarily on routine accounting tasks, you will work on real-world projects involving financial reconciliation, controls, public-market data, fund operations, and finance technology.
The goal is to give you hands-on exposure to how Finance operates within a quantitative trading firm while developing the analytical judgment and attention to detail required in a buy-side environment.
WHAT YOU'LL WORK ON
- Reconciliation & Financial Analysis: Rebuild and reconcile financial or holdings data, investigate breaks, and identify the underlying drivers of differences.
- Financial Controls: Develop tools to identify potential errors in financial workbooks, such as inconsistent formulas, hardcoded values, broken links, and other control issues.
- Finance Technology: Evaluate reconciliation, close management, AP automation, document extraction, and other finance technology solutions.
- Fund Tax & Operations Research: Research how investment managers approach tax screening, operational controls, exception management, and coordination with fund administrators, prime brokers, and tax advisers.
- Turn your analysis into clear workpapers, process maps, control frameworks, and recommendations that can be reviewed and used by the team.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or other advanced degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Strong interest in fund accounting, asset management finance, financial operations, or financial controls
- Strong attention to detail and a willingness to investigate when numbers don't tie or something doesn't make sense
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including comfort with open-ended problems
- Proficiency in Excel
- Ability to independently organize your work and communicate findings clearly
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
NICE TO HAVE
- Knowledge of US GAAP, partnership accounting, auditing, investment funds, or fund structures
- Previous experience in accounting, audit, asset management, fund administration, or financial operations
- Experience with Python, VBA, Power Query, or other data/automation tools
- CPA or CFA coursework/candidacy
WHAT YOU'LL GAIN
- Buy-side exposure: Learn how fund accounting, financial controls, and operations work within a quantitative trading firm.
- Project ownership: Work on substantive projects with real deliverables rather than primarily administrative tasks.
- Finance × Technology: Gain experience applying data and automation to traditional finance and accounting problems.
- Independent problem-solving: Learn how to investigate discrepancies, challenge assumptions, and turn ambiguous problems into structured solutions.
